TRIUMPH STAG

CURRENT PROJECTS

TRIUMPH STAG

The workshop sees the arrival of a Triumph Stag for repaint.

We see the arrival of a Triumph Stag to the fold.

The plan for this particular car is to carry out a bare metal repaint and colour change (read on for the final descision)

First we strip down the shell of bumpers, lights etc.

Using a combination of paint stripper and hand sanding with a DA machine we start to take the car back to bare metal. This is the correct way to carry out any quality repaint as you are then not working over other peoples’ work, any surprises are revealed for example rust spots and paint UNDER filler, and you can start with a nice epoxy primer coat straight onto bare steel providing a great base and job longevity and on this car the customer will also have the added benefit of receiving a car back with far less filler in it…. has been a surprise how much filler a previous restoration company used. Once the car has been bare metaled we apply the NOVOL anti-corrosive epoxy primer prior to any welding work we will do, this is to include resetting of the rear quarters, small repairs around the screen and lower of the front wings.

Starting with the off side rear quarter we remove the lower section as the profile was not correct against the sill where a previous person had welded in a rear repair panel. Once the area is cut out a new section is fabricated and the back of the section and internal of the cavity is painted for protection before the new piece is welded in.

Next we move our attention to the screen areas, the top corner of each wing is removed to gain access for repairs, sections are cut out and new pieces let in. The screen gutters are badly corroded and so we will replace these also, applying a nice bead of sealer to prevent further water ingress. The bottom of each front wing also has small welding repairs carried out.

Once happy with the welding repairs we move on to complete the required filler work. This is followed with coats of standard NOVOL epoxy primer. Once this primer coat is sanded back we will apply a further sealing coat. Before this takes place we attend to the engine bay and use a satin black following the modern twist the paintwork will get. Sealer coat applied the panels now move to the booth. The new colour “FORD PETROL BLUE” a colour used on the iconic Escort Cosworth is applied and looks stunning. A few trim items are sent off to be re-chromed and while they are away the customer has decided to refresh the front seats. The seats are stripped down, we replace the rubber diaphragms as they had collapsed, the existing foams are reused (as at some time in the life of the seats these had been replaced) and new vinyl covers are fitted. The headrests have both the foams and vinyls replaced. The refit is completed and the car is given a final checkover and detail before being collected by the proud owner.
