We have been lucky enough to have been given the opportunity to apply our skills and expertise in restoration and respraying on a Ford Mustang. This Mustang restoration project gave us quite a job list with plenty of work including body repairs followed by a respray to a completely different colour scheme.
An Icon – The Ford Mustang
The Mustang has been an iconic and loved vehicle across the world since it was first introduced in the 1960s. Whether you have drooled over it being driven by Steve McQueen the 1968 movie Bullitt, or simply stolen glimpses at car shows, one thing is for sure, the Mustang is a classic.
The Mustang’s popularity has increased more and more over the years in America, with a UK right hand drive version available since 2015. Over the years, it’s earned the title of the fifth bestselling Ford nameplate – no mean feat.! The Mustang was initially expected to sell in the region of 100,000 units per year, but due to its popularity, it sold 400,000 units in its first year and the one-millionth within two years of launch!
Our Classic Mustang Restoration in Plymouth
Belonging to well-known engine tuner Alan Jeffrey, this 1965 Ford Mustang 5 Litre 380 bhp was one of our favourite and most iconic vehicles we have worked on. With high expectations all around we commenced work on the Ford Mustang knowing that after a long restoration process, we would be bringing this car back to its former glory.
Stripping & Preparation
To start the process, we stripped down the car to get it ready and prepared for both the body repairs and re-spray. Any areas that we had concerns about were taken aback to bare metal, it was at this point that we discovered some previously poorly carried out repairs. With the Mustang stripped down, we could see that some of the panels were not correctly and fully welded onto the frame.
Any gaps that were on the car were looked at, with adjustments and fixes carried out to improve them to give the Ford Mustang the best possible alignment.
Ford Mustang Body Repair
To start the restoration and repair of the Mustang’s bodywork, we carried out rear wing repairs which included welding and filler work. We trial fitted one new wing and once happy placed an order for the opposite side. Carrying on with welding work, we completed the N/S/R quarter and finally turned our attention to filling in and finalising the preparation of the rest of the Mustang’s Shell.
Once all-new wings were fitted and any outstanding rear wing work completed, the next step was to carry out arch rolling and the final stage of panel alignment. In readiness for the primer, all repaired and filled areas are at this point given a coat of spray filler in our booth, all ready for the start of the Ford Mustang’s colour transformation!
Ford Mustang Respray & Colour Change
One of the highlights of this restoration project was the full-colour change, taking the Mustang from black to the Gulf Racing livery. For many, the timeless orange and blue colours of Gulf racing are the most iconic and most widely recognised within motorsports.
One of the most exciting parts of any car restoration for both us and the client is when the car heads into the booth, ready to be painted. This project is by no means an exception, with a buzz going around the workshop in contemplation of the upcoming Gulf colour scheme!
Once the wheels are prepped it’s time to begin the painting process, with all colours and stripes being sprayed on. Once the final panels were completed it was time for the complete Mustang to be lacquered.
it was time to refit the Mustang, with all items of trim cleaned and fitted alongside any new or refurbished parts provided by the customer.
We whole-heartedly enjoyed working on Alans 1965 Ford Mustang and are very proud of what we achieved with this stunning and iconic car and wish him many years of enjoyment with it!
